The Bracket is set

College Cup
The 2009 NCAA College Cup schedual is set

No real suprises for the 16 ranked teams, Virginia has won itself a nice 2nd seed after winning the ACC championship after knocking off Wake Forest & NC State durring the tournament.  I also think the first big team to be upset will be Ohio State as they could play a Boston College team who is very good, or a St. John's team whom has not lost since the start of October.

Wake Forest crash out!

Top Ranked Wake Forest

Virginia have pulled another upset as they defeated Wake Forest in penalty kicks.  In a very windy afair Wake had a tough time keeping the ball on the floor and just lacked any flow because of the pressure from the Cavaliers.

Ike Opara played very well, and was composed in the backline.  There were moments where he made a few wild plays, but always made up for it with his speed and size.  The loss would have to fall on Corbin Bone's shoulders, he struggled to hold  on to the ball all match and just wasnt getting involved enough to impose himself into the game.

What the Dilly yo!

DillyDuka.jpg

According to Soccer Insider Steven Goff, former Rutgers and US U20 standout Dilly Duka is has signed a contract with the MLS.  It is not announced how he is going to enter the MLS, but Goff suggests that he may enter via way of the draft.  If this is true, this screams Freddie Adu all over again. Will we be seeing Philly step out of the way and be allocated money to take someone other then Dilly Duka?

All I know is that this opens up Pandora's Box and allows NCAA kids to pursue European dreams and when they fail, the player can run back to the draft system instead of signing a cheap or developmental deal with a MLS team.

More information on this as news comes through.

Let the playoffs begin!

It's time for the best part of the year, with the College Cup just weeks away we start to see a bit more urgency from the top teams trying to improve their seedings and bring some success to their respective schools by winning a conference championship.  I will be posting my predictions later today, but here is a list of all the bigger conferences matchups for the weekend.

Nov. 3rd NCAA Rankings: Can Akron go undefeated?

This years number 1 pick?

With the regular season on the verge of ending, Akron has a tight grip on the number one ranking this year. The question that is being asked is; can they one up last years Wake Forest team and go the whole regular season undefeated & then win the National Title?

The Finalists

Chris Pontius.jpg

Yesterday they announced the nominees for Rookie of the Year and to my surprise Steve Zakuani did not even make the final ballot. On the other hand Pontius did.  It was quite a surprise as Zakuani was clearly more important to the Sounders season and accumulated more points over the 30 game season.  I personally like Pontius more as a complete player but if you were to choose who had the better season between the two. I would go with the former Akron Zip.

Another name on the list is TFC goalkeeper Stefan Frei; he stole the starting keeper spot away from Greg Sutton and ran with it until he came down with a hand injury. Down the stretch he did struggle a bit with commanding the box and his distribution, but overall he would have been the rookie of the year if it was not for Omar Gonzalez revamping the worst defense in the MLS.

The Final Three:

Stefan Frei (Toronto FC, 13th overall)

Omar Gonzalez (Los Angeles Galaxy, 3rd overall)

Chris Pontius (D.C. United, 7th overall)
